“I am not meaning to insult you David, but what do you mean by your so called “Sign” reading? Stewart said remembering he had heard the same old superstitious banter among farmers from all over the world in every pub, bar and tavern he had been in.

“Don’t, be discounting David. Let me show you something. Look here.” Jack said grabbing an old Field and Stream magazine off the table and turning to the pages that showed waxing and waning moons and the best times to hunt or fish.

“People have known that there was something to it for years and game good game guides have proven it”.” Jack said in support of David.

“That is like scientific tide maps and times, I want to know what signs David says he sees.” Stewart said, taking the initiative of demanding David explain the unpublished weird things that David only explained when he was ready.

“Look Stewart, I forgot about half I used to know about such things but it’s like this. I watch nature; have done it all my life. I learned or listened to old country lore and tried it out to see if it made enough sense. For example, the time to plant corn is when the oak tree’s leaves are as big as a squirrel’s ear, might sound odd to you, but makes perfect sense to me. A big old oak tree is usually the best indicator of climate because it survives. It has survived by whatever Mother Nature instilled in it to know when to put out the first shoots of spring and when to wait a bit for a hundred years or more. If it decides it’s safe from frost to put its new leaves out I plant. If I see squirrels gathering more nuts than usual, it’s a hard winter coming. If the “mast” (dropping of acorns) is heavier than usual, I got an opinion or a plan. Did you know that you can tell the temperature by counting the chirps of a cricket? It's true!
